What a Shopify accessibility audit is
A Shopify accessibility audit tests the templates your shoppers use (home, collection, product, cart, search, account and checkout extensions) against WCAG 2.2 Level AA, with a keyboard, screen readers and an automated scanner. The result is an issue log that names each failure, the WCAG criterion it breaks, where it sits in your theme or apps, and who can fix it. Remediation is the work of fixing that list in code.
Packages and pricing
Free scanner
$0 · automated
Scan your homepage and a product page with our free checker for the automated layer: alt text, unlabelled buttons, blocked zoom and more. It never says “compliant”, because automated checks find only part of the problems.
Accessibility audit
From $300 CAD · timeline agreed at scoping
Manual and automated WCAG 2.2 AA testing of the templates that carry your revenue, on desktop and mobile, with an issue log your team, your developer and your app vendors can each act on.
Accessibility fixes
From $800 CAD · quoted from the audit
We fix the theme code, override or replace app UI that fails, send app vendors their tickets, retest, and draft your accessibility statement. One fixed price, agreed before we start.
What the audit includes
- The templates that carry revenue: home, collection with filters, product with variants, cart drawer, search, account and login, popups, and checkout extensions
- Desktop and mobile, including 200% and 400% zoom
- Screen readers: NVDA with Firefox, VoiceOver with Safari, TalkBack on Android
- A keyboard-only pass from the home page to checkout
- Every WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA success criterion, against the pages in scope
- An automated axe scan of every template in scope
- An issue log split into admin fixes, developer fixes and app-vendor fixes
- A walkthrough call to go through the findings and the order to fix them
How it works
Scoping
A free 30-minute call. We list the templates and apps in scope and quote the audit at a fixed price.
Audit
Manual and automated testing against WCAG 2.2 AA on the pages and timeline agreed at scoping.
Walkthrough
We go through the issue log with you: what blocks shoppers most, what is quick, and what needs an app vendor.
Fixed-price remediation
If you want us to fix it, we quote from the issue log. You can also hand the log to your own developer.
Retest
We retest every fixed issue and tell you in writing what is fixed and what isn’t.
Accessibility statement
A draft statement with the test date, the method and the known limitations, ready for your legal review.
Why not an overlay?
An overlay is a script that puts a toolbar on top of your store. It doesn’t change your theme code, and the public data doesn’t support it as protection.
- 24.25%: about 1 in 4 sued websites in the first half of 2026 already had an accessibility widget installed (EcomBack).
- $1 million: the FTC’s April 2025 final order against accessiBe bars claims that its automated products can make or keep any website WCAG-compliant without evidence, and bars misrepresenting reviews and endorsements as independent.
- 57%: Deque’s axe found 57% of issues by count in Deque’s own audits (2021). The rest needs a person with a keyboard and a screen reader.
- We fix your theme code, and we tell you in writing what we couldn’t fix.

Received an ADA demand letter?
Send it to an attorney first. Then we can help with the technical side: we start with the templates named in the letter, audit the rest of the store, and give you an issue log mapped to WCAG criteria with a dated remediation plan your attorney can use.
Don’t install an overlay in response: about 1 in 4 sued sites already had one. What to do after a demand letter.
What you get
- Issue log: every failure with its WCAG criterion, template, severity, a screenshot and who fixes it (admin, developer or app vendor).
- Summary report: what blocks shoppers most, written for the store owner, not for a developer.
- Remediation plan: the fix order, with a fixed price if you want us to do the work.
- Retest results: after fixes, each issue marked fixed or open, with the date tested.
- Accessibility statement draft: test date, method, known limitations and a contact route.
Who needs an audit
- Stores selling into New York, Florida and Illinois, where most federal website suits were filed in 2025 (Seyfarth: 1,021, 961 and 585), and California, where the Unruh Act adds damages of at least $4,000 per offense.
- Stores that received a demand letter or a “compliance” email.
- Shopify Plus stores and custom themes, including any checkout extensions you’ve added.
- Ontario businesses with 50+ employees, which AODA requires to meet WCAG 2.0 AA. AODA website compliance.
- Stores selling to EU consumers: the European Accessibility Act applies from June 28, 2025; micro service providers are exempt.
What we don’t do
- Legal advice, or answering a demand letter for you.
- “Compliant” certificates, badges or guarantees.
- Overlay or widget installs.
- Filing your AODA compliance report. We cover the website part; the report covers all AODA standards.
Not legal advice. EVDEV is a Shopify development agency, not a law firm. This page is general information, not legal advice. If you’ve received a demand letter or lawsuit, consult an attorney.
Shopify accessibility audit questions
- How much does a Shopify accessibility audit cost?
- Audits start at $300 CAD and fixes at $800 CAD. The price depends on how many templates carry revenue, how customised the theme is and how many apps add storefront UI. You get a fixed quote after a free 30-minute call.
- How long does the audit take?
- It depends on how many templates and apps are in scope, so we agree the timeline with you on the scoping call, before you pay. Fixes are scheduled after the walkthrough and quoted from the issue log.
- Do you fix the issues, or only report them?
- Both. We fix theme code, override or replace failing app UI, and send app vendors their tickets. Or you can give the issue log to your own developer; it is written so they can work from it.
- Will an audit stop a lawsuit?
- No one can promise that. An audit and real fixes reduce the barriers a lawsuit points to, and a dated record of the work helps your attorney. We don’t give legal advice or guarantees.
- Can you provide a VPAT or accessibility conformance report?
- The audit’s issue log is the raw material for one. If a B2B buyer needs a formal conformance report, ask on the scoping call and we’ll quote writing it up.
- Do you file our AODA compliance report?
- No. The report covers all AODA standards and is filed by your organization. We test the website against WCAG 2.0 AA (and 2.2 AA) and give you technical notes for the website part.
- Do you test Shopify Plus checkout extensions?
- Yes. Shopify builds the checkout, but the extensions and customisations you add are yours, and we test them like any other template.
- What about the apps on my store?
- We test every app that adds UI to the storefront, such as popups, reviews and chat. Where the fix is in the app’s code, we write the ticket for the vendor and, if needed, replace or override the component.
- Do you work with US stores?
- Yes. We’re based in Toronto and work with US and Canadian Shopify stores. Prices are in Canadian dollars.
