How does the calculator work out Shopify fees?
Your monthly bill is the plan fee, plus a percentage of your sales and a fixed fee per order for card processing, plus a third-party transaction fee only if you take cards through a gateway other than Shopify Payments.
The formula
Monthly bill = plan fee + (sales × card rate) + (orders × fixed fee per order) + (sales × third-party fee, if you use another gateway)
Two worked examples on Basic
Canada
- Orders = CA$5,000.00 ÷ CA$50.00 = 100
- Plan fee = CA$49.00 (Basic, billed monthly)
- Card processing = CA$5,000.00 × 2.8% + 100 × 30¢ = CA$140.00 + CA$30.00 = CA$170.00
- Third-party transaction fee = 0 (Shopify Payments)
- Total = CA$49.00 + CA$170.00 = CA$219.00, or 4.38% of CA$5,000.00
United States
- Orders = US$5,000.00 ÷ US$50.00 = 100
- Plan fee = US$39.00 (Basic, billed monthly)
- Card processing = US$5,000.00 × 2.9% + 100 × 30¢ = US$145.00 + US$30.00 = US$175.00
- Third-party transaction fee = 0 (Shopify Payments)
- Total = US$39.00 + US$175.00 = US$214.00, or 4.28% of US$5,000.00
Card rates differ by card type. In Canada, Amex and international cards cost 3.5% + 30¢ on Basic. In the US, Shopify lists a separate "premium cards" rate and adds 1% for international cards. Enter your card mix and the calculator weights the rate for you.
Orders are your sales divided by your average order value, so the per-order fee grows with the number of orders, not the size of each one.
Shopify fees by plan (Canada and US)
Basic costs CA$49 a month in Canada and US$39 in the US on monthly billing, and card rates fall as you move up a plan. The third-party transaction fee is the same in both countries.

How much does Shopify take from a $100 sale?
On Basic with Shopify Payments, a CA$100 online sale costs CA$3.10 in card fees in Canada and a US$100 sale costs US$3.20 in the US. With another gateway, Shopify takes its third-party fee instead and your gateway charges its own fee on top.

The plan fee is separate: it is the same whether you sell once or a thousand times.
Which Shopify plan is cheapest for my sales?
With Shopify Payments and standard cards, Basic is cheapest in Canada until about CA$41,500 a month in sales on monthly billing; Grow is cheapest from there to CA$192,500. In the US the same points are US$33,000 and US$147,000.
A bigger plan costs more each month but charges a lower card rate. It pays for itself once your sales are large enough that the rate saving covers the higher plan fee. The calculator works this out for your own billing, card mix and gateway.

How do I avoid Shopify’s third-party transaction fee?
Take card payments through Shopify Payments. Shopify charges the third-party fee only when a different provider processes the payment.
- Orders paid through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay or Shop Pay Installments carry no third-party fee.
- PayPal orders are exempt when Shopify Payments is your primary payment provider.
- Manual payments (cash, cash on delivery, bank transfer, cheque) and POS orders are not charged.
- Stores created on or after 12 May 2025 do pay it on the part of an order paid with store credit or gift cards.
- If another gateway is your primary card processor, payments that still go through Shopify Payments cost the standard rate plus a 1.25% premium.
What this calculator does not include
It covers the plan fee and the fees Shopify charges on online card sales. These costs are left out:
- Tax on your Shopify bill (GST, HST or PST in Canada, sales tax in the US).
- Apps, themes, domains and shipping labels.
- Shopify Plus, which is sold on contract: from CA$3,400 a month in Canada and US$2,300 in the US on a 3-year term, with a 0.2% third-party fee.
- In-person (POS) card rates.
- Currency conversion when you accept a currency other than your payout currency: 2% in Canada, 1.5% in the US.
- Chargebacks: $15 CAD or $15 USD in Canada, $15 USD in the US, returned if you win.
- The Shop Pay Installments merchant rate, which Shopify shows only inside the admin.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Shopify charging me $40?
A charge of about $40 is most likely the Basic plan: US$39 a month on monthly billing in the US, plus any sales tax Shopify adds to the subscription. No Canadian plan is priced at CA$40. Basic is CA$49 a month billed monthly or CA$37 billed yearly, so a charge near CA$40 could be a plan price plus sales tax, or an app or usage charge. Open Settings, Billing in your Shopify admin to see the plan, billing period, currency and tax line.
What percentage of sales does Shopify take?
Shopify Payments charges 2.4% to 2.8% + 30¢ per online sale in Canada and 2.5% to 2.9% + 30¢ in the US on Basic, Grow and Advanced, and you pay the plan fee on top. At CA$5,000 a month on Basic, plan fee and card fees together come to 4.38% of sales.
Are Shopify fees different in Canada and the US?
Yes. Plans are priced in each country's currency (Basic is CA$49 or US$39 a month on monthly billing) and card rates differ: 2.8% + 30¢ in Canada against 2.9% + 30¢ in the US on Basic. The third-party transaction fee is the same in both: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced.
Does Shopify charge fees on PayPal orders?
PayPal orders carry no third-party transaction fee when Shopify Payments is your primary payment provider. If PayPal or another provider handles your payments instead, Shopify charges its third-party fee on those orders and PayPal charges its own fee.
Which Shopify plan is cheapest for my sales?
It depends on your sales and how you take payments. With Shopify Payments and monthly billing in Canada, Grow becomes cheaper than Basic above CA$41,500 a month in sales; in the US the point is US$33,000. Enter your own numbers above to see the cheapest plan.
