Information architecture
Site architecture is how a site's pages are organised and connected — the hierarchy of categories, collections, and products, and the links between them. A flat, logical architecture keeps important pages within a few clicks of the homepage and groups related content so search engines can infer topical authority. It is decided early and expensive to change later, which is why it belongs in the migration plan.
Why it matters
Architecture is decided early, usually by whoever set the store up, and everything afterwards inherits it. That is why it belongs in a migration plan rather than in a later optimisation phase — changing it once traffic depends on it means a full redirect map and a period of instability.
A good structure does two things at once. It keeps important pages within a few clicks of the homepage, so authority reaches them and shoppers find them. And it groups related content so a search engine can infer that this site covers a topic in depth rather than mentioning it once.
The failure mode is not dramatic. It is a store where products rank individually but the site never establishes authority in its category, and nobody can point to the reason.
How it works on Shopify
Shopify's URL structure is fixed — products, collections, pages, and blogs each live under their own prefix, and that cannot be changed. Architecture on Shopify is therefore about the hierarchy of collections and the linking between them rather than about URL design.
The workable pattern is a hub structure. A broad collection covers the category, narrower collections cover the segments within it, and content pages address the questions shoppers ask before choosing. All three link to each other deliberately rather than incidentally.
Depth is the constraint to design against. Every level added pushes products further from the homepage, and past three or four clicks their visibility drops sharply. A wide, shallow structure generally outperforms a deep, precisely-categorised one.
Navigation should reflect the structure but need not expose all of it. Mega-menus listing every collection dilute the signal; a considered menu plus strong internal linking in content does better.
The decision about which faceted combinations become real collections belongs here too, because those pages are part of the architecture rather than an accident of filtering.
Common mistakes
- Mirroring the warehouse. Internal categorisation rarely matches how shoppers search.
- Too deep. Four levels of collection nesting buries the products.
- Collections that duplicate each other. Overlapping categories compete for the same queries — see keyword cannibalization.
- Content in a silo. A blog that links to nothing commercial is authority with no outlet.
- Designing for the current catalogue. Structures that work at 200 products break at 2,000.
- Changing it casually. Restructuring without a redirect plan loses rankings that took years to build.
When you need help
The obvious moment is a replatform or a major catalogue expansion, where the structure is being decided anyway and the cost of getting it right is a planning session rather than a migration.
The other case is a store whose individual pages perform adequately while the site has no topical authority — decent product rankings, no category rankings, and content that attracts links but lifts nothing. That is an architecture and linking problem, and it is diagnosable before it is expensive.
