Is your Shopify store ready for AI shopping?
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Copilot now answer "what should I buy" questions. Enter your store and we will run the same public checks we used to audit thousands of Shopify stores, then tell you what to fix.
What we check
AI readiness is mostly the basics, done right
There is no secret AI file to add. Shopify already sends eligible products to ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini through Shopify Catalog. What decides whether you show up is whether your store is open, complete and readable: real policies, products with images and prices, pages crawlers may index, and structured data that states price, stock, brand and reviews.
Required checks are documented requirements of a named AI channel. Recommended checks are documented best practice from Google, OpenAI or Shopify. Info checks are shown but not scored.
These are the checks from our October 2026 audit of thousands of Shopify stores. See how stores scored on each one, which product data most of them miss, and what to fix first. Read the Shopify AI-readiness study
- Required
Storefront is public
Shopify’s AI channels exclude stores in private (password) mode, and crawlers see only the password page.
- Required
Refund, privacy and terms policies
Every Shopify agentic channel requires a refund policy, a privacy policy and terms of service. Agents also quote them to shoppers.
- Required
Products have a title, image and price
Shopify Catalog drops products with no image or a zero price, and Google’s merchant listings need a price above zero.
- Required
Product pages can be indexed and quoted
Products hidden from search engines are left out of Shopify Catalog. nosnippet keeps a page out of Google’s AI features, and noarchive keeps it out of Bing and Copilot answers.
- Required
AI search crawlers are allowed
Blocking OAI-SearchBot hides your site from ChatGPT search; PerplexityBot, Googlebot, bingbot, Claude-SearchBot and Applebot feed Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Claude and Siri.
- Recommended
robots.txt is Shopify’s current default
A custom robots.txt.liquid freezes older rules. The legacy template blocks /policies/, which hides the policies agents are told to read.
- Recommended
Product structured data with price and availability
Google’s merchant listings and ChatGPT’s shopping results read price, currency and stock status from structured data on the product page.
- Recommended
GTINs (barcodes) on variants
Google, OpenAI’s product feed spec and Shopify all recommend GTINs. They let an agent match your product to the same item elsewhere and trust the comparison.
- Recommended
Brand is set
OpenAI’s product feed requires a brand and Google recommends one. Shopify fills it from each product’s Vendor field.
- Recommended
Shipping and return policy in structured data
Google recommends shippingDetails and hasMerchantReturnPolicy, preferably at the organisation level. Agents use them to answer “how fast” and “can I return it”.
- Recommended
Review ratings in structured data
Google recommends aggregateRating, and ChatGPT says it weighs product quality when it ranks shopping results.
- Info
AI training crawlers
GPTBot, Google-Extended, ClaudeBot, Applebot-Extended and CCBot collect training data. Blocking them does not remove you from AI shopping or search answers.
- Info
Universal Commerce Protocol profile
Shopify Online Stores publish a UCP profile at /.well-known/ucp so agents can browse the catalog and build carts. Headless stores usually do not.
Want more than a checklist?
Showing up in AI answers also depends on what the rest of the web says about you. Our generative engine optimization work covers both: the technical fixes above and the content and citations that get products recommended.

Questions about AI shopping readiness
It runs 13 public checks on your storefront: whether the store is public, has refund, privacy and terms policies, sells products with a title, image and price, lets AI search crawlers in through robots.txt, keeps product pages indexable, and publishes product structured data with price, availability, GTIN, brand, shipping, returns and ratings. It also reports, without scoring, which AI training crawlers you block and whether your store publishes a Universal Commerce Protocol profile.
