The story
Kuma Coffee is a direct trade coffee roaster in Seattle that has been roasting since 2008. From its Shopify store it sells in-season single origins, house blends, subscriptions and Kuma merch such as mugs, tees and totes. EVDEV built the redesigned homepage from supplied Figma designs: ten custom Liquid sections, including a featured coffee with roast level and brightness meters, product carousels with a quick view, and the story of the season's harvest and the roastery.
Kuma Coffee says it only does in-season coffee, so the coffee it puts first on the homepage changes through the year.
Its old homepage was a stock theme layout of a slideshow, a product grid and a collection list. The redesign put the season's coffee, where it comes from and the roastery's story on the homepage, and EVDEV built it on Shopify.
A homepage that leads with the coffee of the season, shows roast, brightness and tasting notes before anyone opens a product page, and lets a shopper check a coffee in a quick view and add it to the cart straight from the homepage.
Kuma's team needed to be able to change the featured coffee and the carousels from the theme editor each season, and every section needed its own phone layout.
We built the homepage as ten custom Liquid sections on the store's Minimal theme.
The featured coffee block reads its roast level, brightness and tasting notes from the coffee's own product data, so any coffee can be featured from the theme editor. One product carousel section runs four times, and each card opens a quick view with the same meters and notes for the coffees and a Read more toggle for long descriptions. The story sections use the brand's red, sand and navy and its display typeface, and every section has its own phone layout.
