- Summary
- Shopify products reach ChatGPT two ways: through the Shopify Catalog, which feeds the ChatGPT channel for stores that sell to US customers, and through the open web, where ChatGPT reads your pages, reviews and what other sites say about you. OpenAI says product results are not ads; it ranks merchants on availability, price, quality and whether they make or primarily sell the item. Competitors win when their product data is more complete and more of the web vouches for them. Both are fixable.

The short answer
A thread on r/shopify this week was titled “ChatGPT keeps recommending a competitor store and never ours”. It is a fair complaint. A growing number of shoppers ask an AI assistant what to buy before they ever open Google. If the answer names a competitor, you never get the visit.
ChatGPT is not choosing randomly, and you are not locked out. It picks products it can understand and trust: clear product data, current prices and stock, and enough evidence around the brand that recommending it feels safe. Stores that lose usually have thinner product pages, fewer reviews and almost no mentions on other sites.
How your products reach ChatGPT
There are two separate routes, and most stores only think about one of them.
Route 1: Shopify's ChatGPT channel
Shopify syndicates products from its Shopify Catalog into ChatGPT, where shoppers can discover them and then check out on your own store's checkout. According to Shopify's help centre, it is active by default for eligible stores and managed under Sales channels, Agentic in the admin. There are no fees beyond your normal payment processing.
- Your store must sell to customers in the United States (the store itself can be anywhere).
- Products must meet Shopify Catalog standards; B2B-only products are not supported.
- Your Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Refund Policy must be completed in the admin.
- Legal disclosures belong in the first 6,000 characters of the product description.
Route 2: the open web
ChatGPT search also reads the web: your product and collection pages, reviews, comparison articles, Reddit threads and the product data that third-party providers pass to OpenAI. This route works in every country, including for Canadian stores that do not sell to the US. It is also the one you can influence most, because it rewards the same things good SEO does.
How ChatGPT decides what to show
OpenAI's own shopping documentation gives three useful facts. First, product results are selected independently and are not ads. Second, products appear when ChatGPT judges them relevant to the question and the user's context, including their memory and custom instructions, so two people can get different answers. Third, when several merchants sell the same item, they are ranked by availability, price, quality and whether the merchant is the maker or primary seller.
OpenAI's product feed specification adds one more: recommended attributes such as rich media and reviews improve ranking and relevance. In plain terms, the store with complete, accurate product information and visible social proof wins ties.
A useful way to think about it: ChatGPT recommends the store that is easiest to describe accurately. If it cannot tell who your product is for, what it is made of and why people like it, it will describe someone else's.
Test your store in 10 minutes
Before fixing anything, find out where you stand. Open ChatGPT in a private window or a fresh chat with memory off, then ask five kinds of questions a real buyer would ask. Here is the set for an imaginary Canadian coffee roaster; swap in your own product.
| Question type | Example prompt | What to write down |
|---|---|---|
| Best for a need | What are the best espresso beans for a home machine? | Are you mentioned? Who is? |
| Your brand vs a rival | Is Northline Coffee better than Harbour Roasters? | What it says about you, and its source |
| Trust check | Is Northline Coffee legit? | Which reviews or sites it cites |
| Price-bound | Good espresso beans under 25 dollars | Whether your price and stock are right |
| Where to buy | Where can I buy fresh roasted coffee in Canada? | Whether your store is linked |
Repeat the same prompts monthly and keep the log. The sources ChatGPT cites are the most useful part: they tell you exactly which sites you need to appear on.
Ten fixes, in order of impact
- Say what the product is in the title. “Northline House Espresso, Whole Bean Coffee, 340g” beats “House Blend”. Assistants match questions to plain descriptions.
- Answer buyer questions in the description. Who it is for, what it is made of, sizing, how to use it, how it compares. Write sentences, not just a spec list.
- Fill the boring fields. Brand (vendor), product type, GTIN or barcode where you have one, and correct variant options. Feeds are built from these.
- Collect reviews, and make them visible. Use a review app that outputs review structured data. Review volume is one of the signals OpenAI names.
- Keep price and stock accurate. Availability and price are ranking factors. Out-of-stock and wrong-price products get skipped.
- Publish comparison and use-case content. Buyers ask “X vs Y” and “best X for Y”. If your site has no honest answer, ChatGPT quotes someone else's.
- Get mentioned on other sites. Review sites, niche blogs, gift guides, local press and genuine Reddit answers. Assistants trust brands that other people talk about.
- Make your brand facts consistent. The same name, description, location and founding story on your About page, social profiles and directories, plus Organization structured data on your site.
- Keep your Google Merchant Center feed complete. It powers Google's AI answers too, and product data is shared across the ecosystem.
- Do not block AI crawlers. Shopify's default robots.txt lets them in. If you or an app edited robots.txt.liquid, check that OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search) is not disallowed.
What Shopify does for you, and what it doesn't
| Area | Done by Shopify | Still your job |
|---|---|---|
| Getting into ChatGPT | Shopify Catalog syndication, on by default for eligible stores | Meeting eligibility; completing store policies |
| Checkout | Your own checkout, branding and payment methods | Nothing |
| Product data | Passes on what you enter | Complete titles, descriptions, GTINs, variants |
| Reviews | Nothing built in | A review app with structured data, and a habit of asking |
| Reputation | Nothing | Mentions, reviews and comparisons on other sites |
| Crawler access | Default robots.txt allows AI crawlers | Not breaking it with custom rules |
How to measure progress
Two numbers are enough. First, the monthly prompt log from the test above: how many of your questions mention you, and which sources are cited. Second, visits from ChatGPT in your analytics. Links from ChatGPT usually arrive with utm_source=chatgpt.com, so they are easy to filter in Shopify analytics or GA4. Expect product data fixes to show up within weeks and reputation work to take months.
Common questions
Does it cost anything to appear in ChatGPT?
Not through Shopify's ChatGPT channel. Shopify states there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT beyond standard payment processing. Appearing through the open web is also free; it depends on your content and reputation.
My store only sells in Canada. Can ChatGPT still recommend it?
Yes. The Shopify ChatGPT channel currently requires selling to US customers, but ChatGPT search reads the web everywhere. Canadian stores are recommended through their own pages, reviews and mentions, so the ten fixes above matter even more.
Can I pay to be recommended?
OpenAI says its product results are selected independently and are not ads. The only lever is making your products and brand the easiest, safest answer to the question.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It is optional. No major AI assistant has confirmed it uses llms.txt for shopping answers. Product data, reviews and third-party mentions do far more.
Is this different from SEO?
Mostly it is the same work pointed at a new reader. Clear product pages, structured data, reviews and a strong Shopify site structure help you in Google and in AI answers at the same time. The difference is that AI assistants lean harder on what other sites say about you.
