- Summary
- Black Friday 2026 is Friday, November 27, and Cyber Monday is Monday, November 30. To prepare a Shopify store, lock your offer and discount setup by early November, test speed and checkout on a duplicate theme, freeze the live theme about two weeks out, then spend BFCM week watching orders instead of editing code. The checklist below dates every task.

Key takeaways
- Shopify Scripts stopped running on June 30, 2026. Any discount logic that used to live in a Script now has to be a Shopify discount, a discount app or a Shopify Function, and it needs testing before November.
- Shopify allows up to 5 product or order discount codes plus 1 shipping code per order, and up to 25 active automatic discounts. Design your offer inside those limits.
- Mobile carried 57.5% of US online sales on Cyber Monday 2025, according to Adobe. Test every offer on a phone first.
- A tiered bundle (buy more, save more) raises the order value without cutting every price. Our Pilot Institute build below shows one way to present it.
- Freeze the live theme about two weeks out and publish only what you tested on a duplicate.
Why BFCM 2026 deserves a plan
Shopify reported that its merchants sold $14.6 billion over the 2025 Black Friday Cyber Monday weekend, up 27% on 2024, with more than 81 million shoppers buying from Shopify stores. Sales peaked at $5.1 million per minute at 12:01 pm EST on Black Friday, and the average cart was $114.70. Shop Pay carried 32% of orders. (Shopify press release, December 2, 2025)
In the US, Adobe measured $11.8 billion in online spending on Black Friday 2025 and $14.25 billion on Cyber Monday, with $44.2 billion across Cyber Week. Adobe also counted 670% more traffic from AI assistants to US retail sites on Cyber Monday than a year earlier. (Adobe, December 2025)
What decides your share is whether the store is ready: an offer people understand in five seconds, a checkout that works on a phone, and nobody editing the live theme at 11 pm on Thursday.
The Shopify Black Friday 2026 timeline
Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November, which is November 26 in 2026, so Black Friday is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30. Here is the order we work in with clients. If you are reading this in late October, you are at the four week mark: compress the first two rows into this week.
| When | Dates (2026) | What to finish |
|---|---|---|
| 8 weeks out | by Oct 2 | Pick the offer, the products and the margin floor. Order stock. List every app and script that touches price or checkout. |
| 4 weeks out | by Oct 30 | Build the sale page and discounts on a duplicate theme. Test speed, mobile layout and checkout. Write the email and SMS sequence. |
| 2 weeks out | by Nov 13 | Theme freeze on the live store. Place real test orders. Confirm tracking. Brief support and fulfilment. |
| BFCM week | Nov 23 to Nov 30 | Publish the sale theme, launch early access, watch orders and stock, fix only what is broken. |
| After | Dec 1 to Dec 31 | Turn off discounts on schedule, send post-purchase and win-back flows, write down what worked. |
Step 1: design the offer before the page
A sitewide percentage is simple, but it gives the same cut to the shopper who would have paid full price for one item and the shopper ready to buy three.
A tiered bundle rewards the second and third item instead. "Buy 1, save 30%. Buy 2, save 40%. Buy 3, save 50%" tells the shopper exactly what the next item is worth, and it lifts the order value where a flat cut only lowers the price.
| Offer type | Works best when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Sitewide percentage | Large catalog, low margins on a few items you can exclude | Gives away margin on orders that would have happened anyway |
| Tiered bundle (buy more, save more) | Products that are bought together or in a sequence, such as courses or consumables | The tier rules must be visible on the page and in the cart, or nobody notices them |
| Free shipping threshold | Low average order value | A threshold set too high gets ignored, too low does nothing |
Then check that Shopify can run it. As of 2026:
- Scripts are gone. Shopify stopped editing and publishing Shopify Scripts on April 15, 2026, and all Scripts stopped running on June 30, 2026. Shopify Functions now cover discounts, shipping and payments. (Shopify changelog) If last year's sale relied on a Script, rebuild it now, not in November.
- Discount Functions run as the cart changes. Shopify executes a discount Function in real time when buyers add products to their cart, and a Function can apply product, order or shipping discounts. (Shopify.dev discounts) That is what makes tiered logic possible without hard-coding prices.
- Know the stacking limits. Customers can use at most 5 product or order discount codes and 1 shipping discount code on the same order, and you can have at most 25 active automatic discounts, app discounts included. Combining two product discounts on the same line item requires Shopify Plus. (Shopify Help Center)
Write the offer as one sentence before anyone designs anything. If it needs two, it is too complicated for a phone.
Step 2: speed, mobile and checkout readiness
Adobe found that 57.5% of US online sales on Cyber Monday 2025 came from mobile devices. (Adobe) Your sale page will be judged on a phone, often on a slow connection, often by someone arriving from an email.
Our own audit of 5,410 Shopify stores found the same problems again and again. On July checks that we treat as upper bounds, 71.3% of stores had add-to-cart below the first phone screen on a product page, and 65.1% showed no free shipping threshold message. 37.7% showed a slow homepage signal from images that never lazy-load, and 37.1% had no shipping, returns or guarantee reassurance near the buy button. (EVDEV 5,410-store study)
Before the sale, check:
- The offer is visible on the first phone screen of the sale page and of every product page in the sale.
- Add-to-cart is reachable without scrolling, or a sticky bar keeps it in reach.
- Nothing jumps while the page loads. Google treats a Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of page loads, as good. (web.dev) Sale banners, countdown timers and app widgets that load late are the usual cause.
- Hero images are compressed and sized for the slot, and everything below the first screen lazy-loads. Speed and Core Web Vitals work is part of our technical SEO service.
- Express buttons (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay) appear and complete an order on a real phone.
- Your Thank you and Order status pages are on the current version. Non-Plus stores had to upgrade by August 26, 2026, and the old Additional scripts box has been view-only since August 28, 2025. (Shopify Help Center) Tracking that lived there must now come from app pixels or custom pixels.
Step 3: theme freeze and testing on a duplicate theme
The riskiest thing you can do in BFCM week is edit the live theme. A banner swap can break the cart drawer, an app update can change a product template, and a discount can go live a day early.
Shopify lets you duplicate a theme and customize the copy while the original stays live. (Shopify Help Center) Use it:
- Duplicate the live theme four weeks out and build the sale on the copy.
- Preview the copy with the real discounts active and place test orders with a real card, then refund them.
- Keep the old live theme unpublished as your rollback. A store can hold 20 themes, so clear out old copies early.
- Set a freeze date about two weeks before Black Friday (November 13 this year). After it, only fixes for broken things go live, and each one is tested on the copy first.
- On launch day, publish the tested sale theme. Do not rebuild it in the editor.
Step 4: inventory, apps and operations
- Inventory. Mark which products you can restock in time and which you cannot. Do not put paid traffic behind items that will sell out on Friday.
- Apps. List every app that injects code into the storefront or touches checkout. Remove what you no longer use, and ask vendors about their BFCM change freeze so an app update does not land on your busiest day.
- Support. Write answers for "where is my order", discount questions and returns before the sale, and put shipping cutoff dates where shoppers see them.
- Fulfilment. Agree daily order capacity with your warehouse or 3PL.
Step 5: email, SMS and paid timing
- Grow the list in October. Give people a reason to sign up for early access.
- Teaser, early access, launch, reminder, last chance. Early access for subscribers a day or two before Black Friday rewards the people who signed up and spreads the load.
- Cyber Monday needs its own message. A new angle, such as the top tier or a final bundle, works better than resending Friday's email.
- Paid. Warm up audiences in early November, before the most competitive days, raise budgets and account spending limits before the sale, and switch ads off the moment a product sells out.
Step 6: analytics and tracking
- Record a baseline from the first weeks of November: sessions, conversion rate, average order value, by device.
- Confirm purchase events fire in Shopify analytics, GA4 and every ad platform from a real test order, not a preview.
- Check that pixels moved off the old Additional scripts box still fire on the new Thank you page.
- Tag every email, SMS and ad link with UTM parameters so you can tell which channel paid for itself.
- AI assistants now send shoppers too (Adobe's 670% figure above). Make sure your product pages are readable by them; our AI shopping readiness checker runs the public checks for free.
Example: the Pilot Institute Black Friday 2026 bundle store
Pilot Institute sells online aviation courses: drone, airplane and helicopter. For Black Friday 2026 they run a dedicated sale store at cart.pilotinstitute.com, which EVDEV, a Shopify agency in Toronto, built on Shopify. Everything below is what any visitor can see on the page today. The sale has not run yet, so there are no results to report.

The offer leads the page: three tier cards (Buy 1 Class Save 30%, Buy 2 Classes Save 40%, Buy 3 Classes Save 50%) sit next to the Black Friday headline. Screenshot from cart.pilotinstitute.com, October 23, 2026.
One offer, stated three ways. The tier cards spell out the whole deal before any product appears: 1 class saves 30%, 2 classes save 40%, 3 classes save 50%. A shopper does not need to open a single product to know what a second class is worth.
Tabs instead of one long grid. Classes are split into Airplane Classes, Drone Classes and Helicopter Class. When we checked, the Drone tab listed 14 classes, Airplane 9 and Helicopter 1. A drone pilot never scrolls past airplane courses to find their own.
Labels for first-time buyers. Two labels steer people who do not know the catalog. Part 107 Made Easy, the course for the FAA drone license test, carries "Popular". Drone Mapping Foundations carries "Start Here". A new visitor gets a first pick and a next step.

With three classes in the bar ($159, $125 and $125), the total shows $204.50 against a struck-through $409, labelled 50% OFF, next to Checkout (3).
A cart bar that sells the next tier. A bar pinned to the bottom of the screen holds three slots. Empty slots read "Add a class to unlock 30% savings", then 40%, then 50%. As classes are added, the bar shows each price, the discounted total, the struck-through original and the tier reached: two classes at $159 and $125 total $170.40 instead of $284 (40% off), and a third class at $125 brings it to $204.50 instead of $409 (50% off).

On a 390 pixel wide phone the tier cards stay above the class list, the active tier changes to "Discount Applied", and the cart bar with the next tier prompt stays in reach.
What to copy. Put the rule above the products. Show which tier the shopper is on and what the next item is worth, right where they check out. Give first-time buyers a labelled starting point, and keep the bar in reach on mobile.

Common Black Friday mistakes on Shopify
- Editing the live theme during BFCM week instead of publishing a tested copy.
- Assuming last year's discount still works after the Scripts shutdown.
- Stacking a code, an automatic discount and a free shipping offer without testing what the checkout actually charges.
- A sale banner that pushes add-to-cart below the first phone screen.
- Installing a new app in November.
- Launching ads before checking that purchase events fire on the new Thank you page.
- Turning discounts off by hand at midnight instead of setting end dates.
- No plan for the new customers once the sale ends.
Frequently asked questions
When is Black Friday 2026?
Black Friday 2026 is Friday, November 27, the day after US Thanksgiving, which falls on Thursday, November 26. Cyber Monday is Monday, November 30, 2026. Many Shopify stores open early access to subscribers a day or two before Friday and run the sale through Cyber Monday.
When should I start preparing my Shopify store for Black Friday?
Start about eight weeks out, which is early October for 2026. That leaves time to choose the offer, order stock and audit apps. If you are starting in late October, focus on the offer, a duplicate theme for testing, checkout tests and a theme freeze by November 13.
How do I set up a Black Friday sale on Shopify?
Decide the offer, then create it in Shopify Discounts as automatic discounts or codes, or with a discount app or Shopify Function for tiered rules. Build the sale page on a duplicate theme, test real orders on a phone, set start and end dates, and publish the tested theme on launch day.
Can I stack discounts on Shopify for Black Friday?
Partly. A customer can use up to 5 product or order discount codes and 1 shipping code on one order, and a store can run up to 25 automatic discounts. Each discount must be set to combine with the others, and stacking two product discounts on the same item requires Shopify Plus.
Do Shopify Scripts still work for Black Friday 2026?
No. Shopify ended editing and publishing of Scripts on April 15, 2026, and all Scripts stopped running on June 30, 2026. Discount, shipping and payment logic that used Scripts must move to Shopify Functions, a public app or native Shopify discounts, and it should be tested well before the sale.
What is a theme freeze?
A theme freeze is a date, usually about two weeks before Black Friday, after which nobody edits the live theme except to fix something broken. All sale changes are built and tested on a duplicate theme, then published in one step. It removes the most common cause of BFCM outages: untested live edits.
Are bundles better than a sitewide discount on Black Friday?
For products bought together or in a sequence, usually yes. A tiered bundle gives the bigger discount only when the shopper buys more, so it raises the order value instead of cutting every price. A sitewide percentage is simpler and suits large catalogs where bundles make little sense.
How do I make my Shopify store fast enough for Black Friday?
Shopify runs the servers, so speed work is about your theme. Compress and size images, lazy-load everything below the first screen, remove unused apps, and make sure banners and timers do not shift the layout. Test on a real phone, not only on desktop.
